Philip Taaffe specialises in appropriating the work of others and using it as the subject of his own work. In ‘Defiance’ (1986) for example, he takes a piece by Bridget Riley and reinterprets it in such a way that he makes a comment on the impersonality of the Op Art movement. Other works include ‘Homo Fortissimus Excelsius’ (1986), his take on Newman’s ‘Vir Heroicus Sublimus’ (1951) and also ‘Green Blue’ (1987), a silk screen collage referencing the work of Ellsworth Kelly.
