The 50 most famous artists of all time

A ranked list of the great painters and sculptors, with their best-known works.

"Most famous" is hard to measure, so we used a transparent yardstick: the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article about each artist. An artist covered in 250 languages is known far more widely than one covered in 30. We ranked the artists in the Art Icons collection by that count (figures checked 2026-10-10).

Every entry links to a full profile with a biography, a gallery of famous works, facts, a life map and a quiz.
